You work with partners, not around them

From day one you will work alongside our partners, contribute to the thinking, and up close how senior people frame and crack hard problems. Yet you will also own real pieces of analysis, which is possible because partners are directly overseeing your work.

Phong Nguyen

MBA Candidate at Wharton

Phong is a healthcare strategist with experience spanning consulting to board-level enterprise strategy. At Recon Strategy, Phong worked on commercial diligence and growth strategy across payers, providers, and biotech and was the director of his dance troupe, Nomad. From Recon, he was hired as an Associate Director (Corporate Strategy) at Optum and earned a significant promotion to Director at UnitedHealth Group. He then decided to pursue an MBA at Wharton. Phong has a BA from Harvard University with a major in neurobiology and minor in history.

David Kaufmann

MD candidate at Mayo Clinic

David's dream is to bridge design, strategy, and clinical insight to create solutions that transform care delivery. He is currently a medical student at Mayo Clinic. While at Recon he worked across life sciences, pharmaceuticals, and provider networks. His undergrad degree is from Dartmouth College. Before joining Recon, David worked in laboratories that developed new cancer drugs and diagnostic technologies, and in a group that developed innovative health systems solutions.

Anja Schempf

Manager at Pfizer

Following her stint at Recon and with an MBA in her back pocket, Anja is building her career in the pharma industry. After 3 years at Recon she went to Columbia Business School to earn her MBA. Following that she joined Pfizer where she is currently a manager in the strategy and consulting team. Previously Anja earned her undergrad degree at the University of Chicago.

Two ways to join us

We hire a small number of people into each role every year. Below is what each involves and how to apply.

FULL-TIME - Cambridge/ Boston

Associate Consultant

Our core full-time role for early-career talent. Associate Consultants work directly with partners on live client engagements — building analyses, running primary research, and helping frame and answer the strategic questions at the heart of each project.

It’s a role with real ownership and early client exposure, designed for people who want a formative few years before business school, medical school, or their next move. We look for sharp analytical thinking, curiosity about healthcare, and the kind of collaborative instinct that fits a small team.

Associate Consultants have responsibility for research and analysis of specific project elements and also contribute across all aspects of project delivery. A typical week will involve interviewing industry experts, analyzing qualitative or quantitative data and extracting key insights, building financial models, developing a point of view on how project learnings will answer the overall strategy question, and creating materials that articulate these ideas. Associate Consultants also have opportunities to contribute to the firm more generally, for example through research and writing projects or by taking ownership of an internal process.

REQUIREMENTS

Available to start August or early September 2027
Bachelor’s degree with a focus on domains requiring rigorous and data-driven thinking; biological and physical sciences, computer science, engineering, economics, etc.
Demonstrated interest in healthcare or related fields, with exposure through coursework, summer internships, and/or 1-2 years post-graduation work experience
An ability to actively listen, engage in rigorous debate, and bring fresh perspective to a project team

Summer Associate

A summer role for students exploring healthcare strategy before committing to it full-time. Summer Associates are embedded in real engagements from week one — the same partner proximity and client exposure as our full-time team, on a project scaled to the summer.

It’s the clearest way to find out whether Recon is the right launchpad for you, and for many it’s the path to a full-time offer. We look for the same qualities we hire for year-round: analytical horsepower, genuine interest in the work, and a collaborative spirit.
